The JKIA.co.ke Flightline Desk · Private safari transfer
Private Transfer from JKIA to Amboseli
A private, door-to-door road transfer from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to Amboseli — the land of big elephant herds beneath Mount Kilimanjaro — met on arrival and driven straight out on the Mombasa Road without crossing the city.
Priced per private vehicle — we confirm the full price before you pay. This is an independent booking service, not an airline or the airport.
What you’re booking
A private road transfer, priced per vehicle
This is a private point-to-point transfer between JKIA and Amboseli — one vehicle, your group only, your full luggage, direct to your lodge or camp. Because JKIA sits on the Mombasa Road side of Nairobi, you head straight out toward Emali without crossing the city, which makes it one of the more efficient safari drives from the airport.
We quote each transfer individually — the price depends on your vehicle, lodge or gate, dates and any add-ons — and confirm it in writing before you pay.
Price basis
Fixed to the vehicle, not per person — a family or group shares one price. Tell us your dates, group size, lodge and luggage for an exact figure.
Amboseli park entry fees, tolls and gratuities are excluded — see what’s included.

Step by step
How the JKIA to Amboseli transfer works
You book and we confirm the price
Send your flight, dates, group size, lodge and luggage. We reply with a fixed per-vehicle quote and a written confirmation once you’re happy.
We meet you at JKIA arrivals
Your driver waits in the arrivals hall with a name sign after you clear immigration and collect your bags. We monitor your flight for any change.
Straight out on the Mombasa Road
From JKIA we join the A104 toward Emali without doubling back through the city — then turn off toward the park, with photo stops as Kilimanjaro comes into view.
Into the park and your lodge
We continue via your gate (Iremito or Kimana) to your lodge or camp. The final stretch and park tracks are rougher, so we plan the vehicle and timing around them.
The drive, honestly
Route, road condition and the right vehicle
Amboseli is about 215 km via Iremito Gate (~4 hours) or 240 km via Kimana Gate (~4.5 hours) from Nairobi, both leaving town on the Mombasa Road (A104) and turning off at Emali. Because JKIA is already on that side of the city, you save the cross-town crawl.
The main road to Emali is sealed tarmac. The final stretch toward and inside the park is rougher and corrugated in places, and it can be soft after rain — so a high-clearance 4×4 is the recommended choice, especially in the wet season and if you’ll do any driving inside Amboseli. A saloon can reach some lodges in dry conditions, but we’ll tell you honestly when it won’t.
Why Amboseli
Kilimanjaro, elephants and getting your timing right
Best views of Kilimanjaro
Amboseli is famous for the sight of elephants against Mount Kilimanjaro rising across the border in Tanzania. The mountain is clearest in the early morning and around sunset, and often hides behind cloud in the middle of the day.
If catching the mountain matters to you, we’ll plan the transfer so you arrive with a good chance of a clear window — and add photo stops on the approach.
The park & gate timing
Amboseli National Park is managed by the Kenya Wildlife Service. Park gates generally operate in daylight hours — roughly 06:00 to 18:00 — and there is no driving in the park after dark, so arrivals are planned to reach your gate and lodge before nightfall.
We’ll confirm the current gate hours and your lodge’s check-in guidance when we quote, so nothing catches you out on the day.
Plan the day
Timing, late arrivals and the fly option
Arrive before the gate closes
Because park gates close around dusk and there’s no night driving inside, we usually recommend leaving JKIA by early afternoon at the latest. For a late-evening landing, a Nairobi overnight and a morning start is the safer plan.
If your JKIA flight is delayed
We monitor your inbound flight and adjust the pickup for airline delays at no penalty. If a late landing risks missing the gate, we’ll advise a morning departure rather than a rushed drive.
Prefer to fly?
Scheduled light aircraft also serve Amboseli from Wilson Airport in about 45 minutes, with a soft-bag weight limit. We can arrange the JKIA–Wilson leg and lay out both options honestly.
The return to catch your flight
For the trip home we build in a generous buffer for the road and Nairobi traffic, plus your airline’s check-in cut-off — see departing from JKIA.

Questions
JKIA to Amboseli transfer — FAQ
How far is Amboseli from JKIA and Nairobi?
Amboseli is roughly 215 km from Nairobi via the Iremito Gate, or about 240 km via the Kimana Gate. Both routes leave the city on the Mombasa Road and turn off at Emali — and because JKIA is already on that side of town, you don’t have to cross Nairobi.
How long is the drive from JKIA to Amboseli?
About 4 hours via Iremito Gate and around 4.5 hours via Kimana Gate, plus stops. Times are indicative and depend on traffic leaving town, the weather and the condition of the final stretch into the park.
Which route does the JKIA to Amboseli transfer take?
We take the A104 Mombasa Road south to Emali, then turn off toward the park via your gate (Iremito or Kimana). The main road is tarmac; the last section toward and inside Amboseli is rougher.
Do I need a 4×4 for the JKIA to Amboseli transfer?
We recommend a high-clearance 4×4 for Amboseli. The main road to Emali is tarmac, but the final stretch and the park tracks are rough and can be soft after rain. A saloon can reach some lodges in dry conditions, but a 4×4 is the reliable choice, especially in the wet season.
Can I see Mount Kilimanjaro on the way to Amboseli?
Yes — Amboseli is famous for it. Kilimanjaro is clearest in the early morning and around sunset and often clouds over at midday, so we plan your timing to give you the best chance of a clear view and add photo stops on the approach.
What time do Amboseli park gates open and close?
Park gates generally operate in daylight, roughly 06:00 to 18:00, with no driving in the park after dark. Hours are set by the Kenya Wildlife Service and can change, so we confirm the current times for your travel date and plan the transfer to reach your gate before nightfall.
Should I drive or fly from Nairobi to Amboseli?
Driving keeps all your luggage and is efficient from JKIA since you don’t cross the city; it takes around 4–4.5 hours. Flying from Wilson Airport takes about 45 minutes but has a soft-bag weight limit and fixed schedules. We can arrange either, including the JKIA–Wilson leg, and advise honestly.
How much does a private transfer from JKIA to Amboseli cost?
We price it per vehicle rather than per person, and the figure depends on the vehicle, your lodge or gate, one-way or return, the season and any add-ons. Park fees, tolls and gratuities are excluded. Request a quote and we’ll confirm an exact price before you pay.
What happens if my flight into JKIA is delayed?
We track your inbound flight and adjust the pickup for airline delays at no penalty. If a late landing would risk missing the park gate before it closes, we’ll recommend a morning departure rather than a rushed drive.
Will the driver meet me at JKIA arrivals and take me to my lodge?
Yes. After you clear immigration and collect your bags, your driver is waiting in the arrivals hall with a name sign, and this is a door-to-door service — tell us your lodge or camp and we’ll take you right there.
