Can you do a city tour on your layover?

The honest answer depends on your total layover minus everything that isn’t sightseeing — immigration, baggage, city traffic and getting back in time to check in. We plan from your flights, never just the headline number.

Minimum recommended layover

7 hrto leave & tour
8–9 hr+ comfortable

Here’s a worked example for a 7-hour international layover — see how little of it is actually free:

0:00Wheels down. Taxi to stand and off the aircraft.
+0:15–1:15Immigration (eTA), baggage and customs into the Terminal 1E hall — busy at peak arrival banks.
+1:15Meet your driver, store bags if needed, set off. City traffic can be heavy.
+1:45–4:00Your Nairobi sights — this is the part you actually came for.
+4:00–5:00Drive back to JKIA with a traffic buffer.
+5:00Be checked in ~3 hours before an international departure. On a 7-hour layover that’s about here.
! Under 7 hours  We’ll usually advise you to stay airside — rest, eat, or book a lounge — rather than risk your onward flight. See short layover activities for what fits a tighter window.
You must be able to enter Kenya to leave the airport. A city tour means clearing immigration, so you’ll need a Kenya eTA (unless you’re exempt). Airside-only transit passengers can’t take this tour.

What you’re booking

A private city tour, priced per group

One private, air-conditioned vehicle for your group, a driver-guide, and an itinerary you shape. Because it’s private, you choose the sights, set the pace, and don’t share the day with strangers.

We price per vehicle by group size, and confirm the figure in writing before you pay. Attraction entry fees are extra and quoted separately, since they’re set by each site and vary by residency.

Best for: long-layover travellers, first-time visitors with a spare afternoon, and small groups or families who want a comfortable, flexible introduction to Nairobi.

Price basis

Quoted per groupby vehicle & hours

A private vehicle and guide for your group — tell us your layover, group size and the sights you want, and we’ll send a fixed price.

✓ Price fixed before payment ✓ Flight monitored ✓ Timed to your check-in

Attraction entry fees, meals and gratuities are excluded — see what’s included.

Build your day

Choose your Nairobi sights

We fit as many as your layover sensibly allows — usually two or three at a relaxed pace. Nairobi’s traffic is the main limiter, so we group nearby sights (many sit together in the Karen–Langata area).

Giraffe Centre

Feed and get nose-to-nose with endangered Rothschild’s giraffe (Langata; open daily, ~1–2 hrs).

Sheldrick elephant orphanage

The famous baby-elephant visit — but only in a fixed 11am–12pm window and by advance booking, so it shapes the whole day.

Karen Blixen Museum

The 1912 Out of Africa farmhouse in leafy Karen — a calm, historic stop.

Bomas of Kenya

Traditional homesteads and dance performances showcasing Kenya’s cultures (Langata).

Nairobi National Museum

Kenyan history, culture and natural history, plus the adjacent snake park (city centre).

City & markets

The Railway Museum, a city viewpoint, Maasai markets and Kazuri bead workshop for a taste of the CBD.

Timing note: the Sheldrick orphanage only admits visitors 11am–12pm with a pre-booking, and some sites keep short or changing hours. Tell us your must-sees and we’ll build a realistic order — and say honestly if one won’t fit your layover. For wildlife plus giraffes and elephants together, see the Nairobi wildlife combination tour.

The fine print, plainly

Timing, delays and getting you back

Your flight comes first

We build the day around your onward check-in time and keep a traffic buffer. If sightseeing would put your flight at risk, we shorten or reroute — getting you back is non-negotiable.

If your inbound is delayed

We monitor it and adjust or, if there’s no longer enough time, we’ll tell you honestly and refund per the terms on your quote rather than run a rushed tour.

Cancellation

Cancellation terms are shown on your written quote before you pay. No hidden fees, no false urgency.

On the day

Share a working phone or WhatsApp number so the desk and driver can reach you in arrivals and adapt if plans shift.

Questions

Nairobi city tour from JKIA — FAQ

How long a layover do I need for a Nairobi city tour?

We recommend a minimum of about 7 hours to leave the airport for a short city tour, and 8–9 hours or more for a relaxed one. That allows for immigration and baggage, city traffic, sightseeing and getting back to check in about 3 hours before an international flight. Under 7 hours, we usually advise staying airside.

Do I need a visa or eTA to leave JKIA for a city tour?

Yes — leaving the airport means clearing immigration, so you’ll need a Kenya eTA unless your nationality is exempt. Airside-only transit passengers who don’t pass immigration can’t take the tour. See our Kenya eTA guide before you travel.

How much does a private Nairobi city tour from JKIA cost?

We price per vehicle by group size and hours, not per head, and confirm the figure before you pay. Attraction entry fees, meals and gratuities are excluded and quoted separately, since fees are set by each site and vary by residency. Request a quote for an exact price.

Which Nairobi sights can I see on a layover?

Popular choices include the Giraffe Centre, the Sheldrick elephant orphanage (fixed 11am–12pm, pre-booked), the Karen Blixen Museum, Bomas of Kenya, the Nairobi National Museum and city markets. We usually fit two or three at a relaxed pace, grouping nearby sights to beat the traffic.

Will I make my connecting flight?

Getting you back is the priority. We plan the day around your onward check-in time with a traffic buffer, monitor your flights, and shorten or reroute the tour if needed. If your inbound is delayed so much that the tour is no longer safe, we’ll tell you honestly rather than risk your flight.

Can I store my luggage during the tour?

Yes. You can add luggage storage so you sightsee hands-free rather than carrying bags around the city. Ask us to include it in your quote.

Is the tour private or shared?

Private. You get your own air-conditioned vehicle and driver-guide for your group only, so you choose the sights and set the pace without sharing the day with strangers.

Can you meet me inside JKIA arrivals?

Yes. Your driver-guide waits in the Terminal 1E arrivals hall with a name sign once you’ve cleared immigration and collected any bags, and we track your flight so an early or late landing is fine.

Is this a city tour or a wildlife safari?

This is a city and culture tour. If you want Nairobi National Park wildlife combined with the Giraffe Centre and Sheldrick elephants, see our Nairobi wildlife combination tour or the JKIA layover safari instead.

What happens if my layover is too short?

We’ll say so honestly and suggest an airside alternative — resting, dining or booking a lounge — or a tighter nearby option from our short layover activities guide, rather than sell you a tour that risks your flight.
