The JKIA.co.ke Activites and Tours · Layover guide
Short Layover Activities from JKIA
What you can do on a Nairobi layover depends on one number: your usable time. Take your total layover, subtract immigration, baggage, traffic and the check-in buffer for your onward flight, and what’s left decides whether you stay airside or head out to see lions, elephants or the city.
To leave the airport you must be able to enter Kenya (a Kenya eTA, unless exempt). Airside-only transit passengers stay inside. Independent guide — not the airport or an airline.

What can you do — by total layover
This table is deliberately conservative. It already assumes roughly 1–1.5 hours to clear immigration and baggage, a Nairobi traffic buffer each way, and being back to check in about 3 hours before an international flight. Use your scheduled layover, and add margin if your inbound might be late.
| Total layover | Verdict | What realistically fits |
|---|---|---|
| Under 4 hr | × Stay airside | Not enough time to clear immigration, travel and return safely. Rest, eat, freshen up or book a lounge inside the airport. |
| 4–6 hr | ! Borderline | Usually stay airside. Leaving is tight once you subtract immigration, traffic and check-in — only consider a very short nearby visit if everything runs perfectly, and never with a delayed inbound. |
| 6–8 hr | ✓ You can leave | Enough for a focused trip with margin: a Nairobi National Park layover safari, or a short city or Giraffe Centre visit. Store your bags and keep a traffic buffer. |
| 8 hr+ | ✓ Plenty | A relaxed city tour, a wildlife combination (park + elephants + giraffes), or a park drive plus one or two attractions. |
The gate before the gate
Can you actually leave the airport?
Time isn’t the only requirement. To do anything outside the terminal you have to clear immigration — which means being allowed to enter Kenya.
You’ll need a Kenya eTA
Leaving the airport means passing immigration, so you need a Kenya eTA unless your nationality is exempt. Apply ahead of time — it isn’t issued at the door.
Entry is always at the officer’s discretion, so carry your onward ticket and details.
Airside-only transit
If you’re connecting without passing immigration, you stay airside and can’t take a city or wildlife trip — but you can still use the lounges, dining and rest options in the terminal.
See connecting flights at JKIA for the transit rules.
Short or tight layover
What to do without leaving the airport
If your usable time is short — or you can’t clear immigration — the smart play is to make the terminal comfortable rather than risk your flight.
Rest, eat and freshen up
- Book a lounge for a quiet seat, food, Wi-Fi and a shower
- Grab a proper meal or good coffee between flights
- Charge devices and get some work or sleep done
Handle the practicalities
- Store cabin bags so you’re not dragging them around
- Sort a SIM, cash or forex for the next leg
- Check your onward gate and terminal on the boards
Enough time to head out
Leaving the airport — what’s nearby
Nairobi rewards a layover like few airports do: a real national park sits minutes away, with elephants and giraffes close by. Here’s what’s within reach, closest first.
Wildlife, minutes away
Nairobi National Park is roughly 20–40 minutes from JKIA — a genuine 4×4 game drive with lions, rhinos, giraffe and buffalo against the city skyline. The Giraffe Centre and the Sheldrick elephant orphanage (fixed 11am–12pm, pre-booked) sit nearby in Langata.
City & culture
With more time, the Karen Blixen Museum, Bomas of Kenya, the National Museum and city markets give a taste of Nairobi. Traffic is the main limiter, so we group nearby sights.

We plan Nairobi layovers conservatively, from real timings — immigration, traffic and check-in buffers — so our advice protects your onward flight first and shows you Kenya second. We’ll always tell you when the honest answer is “stay airside.”

Layover feasibility depends on your exact flights, immigration, traffic and site opening times — confirm before you commit, and never risk your onward flight.

Questions
JKIA layover activities — FAQ
How long a layover do I need to leave JKIA?
As a conservative guide, about 6 hours or more to leave for a focused trip like a Nairobi National Park safari, and 8 hours or more for a city or wildlife combination. Under about 4 hours you should stay airside, and 4–6 hours is borderline — usually safer to stay inside once you subtract immigration, traffic and the check-in buffer.
Can I leave the airport during a layover in Nairobi?
Only if you can clear immigration, which means holding a Kenya eTA (unless exempt) and being admitted. Airside-only transit passengers who don’t pass immigration must stay in the terminal, where lounges, dining and rest options are available.
What can I do at JKIA without leaving the airport?
Plenty for a short layover: book a lounge for a quiet seat, food, Wi-Fi and a shower; eat and charge devices; store cabin bags; and sort a SIM, cash or forex for your next leg. It’s the safest choice when your usable time is tight.
What’s the closest thing to do near JKIA on a layover?
Nairobi National Park is the standout — roughly 20–40 minutes away for a genuine 4×4 game drive with lions, rhinos and giraffe. The Giraffe Centre and Sheldrick elephant orphanage are nearby in Langata, and city sights are a little further with more time.
Will I make my connecting flight if I go on a layover tour?
Our bookable layover tours are private and flight-timed, with a feasibility check first and a built-in traffic buffer, and we monitor your flights. If your inbound is delayed enough to make it risky, the honest advice is to stay airside — protecting your onward flight always comes first.
Should I store my luggage during a layover trip?
Yes. Storing cabin bags lets you move freely and comfortably rather than carrying them around a park or the city. You can add luggage storage to any layover plan.
Is a 5-hour layover enough to do something in Nairobi?
It’s borderline. Once you remove immigration and baggage, a Nairobi traffic buffer each way and the check-in time for your onward flight, there’s very little usable time left. We usually advise staying airside on a 5-hour layover, especially if your inbound could be late.
How do I know exactly what fits my layover?
Send us your inbound and onward flights and we’ll work out your realistic usable time and tell you honestly what’s feasible — a specific tour, an airside plan, or waiting for a longer layover next time. We won’t sell you something that risks your flight.
