Landing at JKIA from abroad and flying on to Mombasa, Kisumu, Eldoret, Malindi or Ukunda? You arrive at Terminal 1E, clear immigration (eTA needed unless exempt), usually collect your bags, then head landside to Terminal 1D to check in again for the domestic leg. It is a full re-entry process, not a corridor walk — plan the buffer accordingly.

- Land and follow Arrivals to Terminal 1EAll international arrivals feed into the 1E arrivals hall regardless of which concourse your airline departs from.

- Collect your bags and clear customsUnless your airline confirmed your bags are through-checked to the final destination, collect them at the belt and walk the customs channel (green/red).
- Walk landside to Terminal 1D1D is the domestic terminal within the same Terminal 1 complex — a signed walk of roughly 10–20 minutes at arrival pace, no vehicle needed.

Will my bags transfer automatically?
The single most important question — ask it at first check-in
On one ticket (for example an international Kenya Airways flight connecting to a KQ domestic leg), bags may be tagged through to your final destination — but this is airline- and route-specific, never assume it. Ask at your origin check-in whether the tag reads your final city, and keep the receipt.
On separate tickets (an international arrival plus a separately bought Jambojet, Fly540 or Skyward flight), your bags will not transfer: you collect them at 1E, clear customs with them, and check them in again at 1D. Budget your buffer for the full process, and note the domestic carrier’s baggage allowance may be smaller than your international one — excess fees apply at the 1D scale.
A worked 3-hour connection
An on-time 09:00 international landing connecting to a 12:00 domestic departure, on separate tickets with checked bags — the everyday worst case. Each stage can run longer, which is why 3 hours is comfortable rather than generous.
- 09:00Land at JKIA. Taxi to stand, disembark, follow Arrivals into Terminal 1E.
- 09:15–10:00Immigration. Queue length varies by hour and season; eTA approval ready on your phone or printed.
- 10:00–10:30Baggage and customs. Collect from the belt, walk the customs channel. Through-checked on one ticket? You skip straight past this stage.
- 10:30–10:50Walk to Terminal 1D. Signed landside walk within the Terminal 1 complex, roughly 10–20 minutes with a trolley.
- 10:50–11:15Domestic check-in and bag drop. Aim to be at the 1D desks a full hour before departure; cut-offs commonly fall 45–60 minutes out.
- 11:15–12:00Security, gate and boarding. Domestic boarding typically opens about 30 minutes before departure — you make a 12:00 flight with margin to spare.
Timings vary and cut-offs are the airline’s, not ours. Immigration queues, baggage delivery and check-in deadlines all shift by hour, season and carrier — confirm your domestic airline’s cut-off, and if your inbound is delayed, tell the onward airline immediately at the 1D desk.
How much time do you actually need?
One ticket, bags through-checked
The protected case: the airline sold the connection, so it plans the timing and rebooks you if the inbound is late. Around 2 hours can be workable when the airline itself sells it — but let the airline’s own minimum connection time be your guide, not optimism.
Separate tickets
You carry all the risk: a late inbound is your problem, and the domestic carrier owes you nothing. Three hours is the sensible floor; more if you land at a peak hour or the domestic leg is the last flight of the day. Flexible fares and an early-enough onward booking are your insurance.
Overnight option
If the maths looks tight or the domestic flight is the day’s last, break the journey: an airport-area hotel with an early shuttle makes the morning flight easy. See hotels closest to JKIA and day-use stays.

Scheduled domestic flights (Mombasa, Kisumu, Eldoret, Malindi, Ukunda) leave from JKIA’s Terminal 1D — but safari light aircraft to the Masai Mara, Amboseli or Samburu on Safarilink, AirKenya Express and similar depart from Wilson Airport, a separate airport ~15–17 km away by road.
