What you’re booking

A short, easy private transfer — priced per vehicle

Naivasha is the closest of our safari transfers and one of the easiest days out from the airport: a private vehicle, your group only, on good tarmac from JKIA to your lakeside lodge, hotel or conference venue. No shared shuttle, no rough roads, and easily done as a day trip or an overnight.

We quote each transfer individually — the price depends on your vehicle, exact destination, dates and any add-ons — and confirm it in writing before you pay.

Who it’s best for: conference and team travellers heading to a lake resort, families on a weekend break, birders and walkers combining Crescent Island or Hell’s Gate, and anyone wanting a smooth, short first day after a long flight.

The drive, honestly

Route, road condition and the right vehicle

JKIA Nairobi Escarpment Naivasha sealed tarmac · A8 highway
Sealed tarmac the whole way

Lake Naivasha is only about 90 km from Nairobi, and the drive is roughly 1.5–2 hours on sealed tarmac via the A8 highway. From JKIA, allow a little extra to clear the city, so plan on around 2–2.5 hours door to door depending on traffic.

The whole route is paved, so a comfortable saloon or a passenger van is perfectly adequate — you don’t need a 4×4 for the town, the lakeside lodges or the main resort roads. A 4×4 is only worth it if you’re adding rough park tracks or heading off-road in wet weather.

The easy first day: because it’s short and smooth, Naivasha is an ideal soft landing straight after a long-haul flight — or a genuine same-day return trip from the airport.

Make a day of it

What to do around Lake Naivasha

Naivasha packs a lot into a small area, which is why it works so well as a short break or a stop on the way to a wider safari. We can add any of these to your transfer as a guided day.

Crescent Island

A private sanctuary on the lake where you walk on foot among zebra, giraffe, gazelle and wildebeest — there are no big predators, so it’s a rare walking safari.

Hell’s Gate National Park

About 18 km from Naivasha: cycle or walk among wildlife, hike the dramatic gorge, and see the geothermal scenery that inspired film landscapes.

Lake Naivasha boat ride

A guided boat trip to see hippos and fish eagles up close — a relaxed highlight, usually arranged through your lodge or a licensed operator.

Mt Longonot

A rewarding half-day hike up a dormant volcano to walk (part of) the crater rim, with sweeping Rift Valley views on a clear day.

One honest safety note: the Hell’s Gate gorge can flood dangerously and fast during heavy rain. Always follow current park and ranger guidance on the day, and we’ll factor the weather into your plan.

Plan the day

Timing, late arrivals and day trips

Late arrivals are easy here

Because the drive is short and fully paved, a later-afternoon or evening landing at JKIA is far less of a problem than for the longer safari routes. We can still get you to a Naivasha lodge the same evening.

Doable as a day trip

Naivasha is close enough to visit and return to the airport in a day. If you have a long JKIA layover, ask about a day trip — we’ll check the feasibility against your onward flight honestly.

If your JKIA flight is delayed

We monitor your inbound flight and adjust the pickup for airline delays at no penalty, then re-time the drive to suit.

The return to catch your flight

For the trip back we build in a buffer for the escarpment climb and Nairobi traffic, plus your airline’s check-in cut-off — see departing from JKIA.

Questions

JKIA to Naivasha transfer — FAQ

How far is Naivasha from JKIA and Nairobi?

Lake Naivasha is about 90 km from Nairobi. From JKIA, on the far side of the city, allow a little extra to clear traffic — but it remains one of the shortest Rift Valley trips from the airport.

How long is the drive from JKIA to Naivasha?

Roughly 1.5–2 hours from Nairobi on the A8 highway, or around 2–2.5 hours door to door from JKIA depending on how heavy the city traffic is when you land.

Do I need a 4×4 for the JKIA to Naivasha transfer?

No. The route and the lakeside lodges are reached on sealed tarmac, so a comfortable saloon or a passenger van is fine. A 4×4 is only worth booking if you plan to add rough park tracks or off-road driving in wet weather.

Is the road from Nairobi to Naivasha good?

Yes — it’s a sealed tarmac highway (the A8) that descends the Great Rift Valley escarpment, with a well-known viewpoint on the way down. It’s scenic and comfortable for a standard vehicle.

What is there to do around Lake Naivasha?

Plenty for a short stay: walk among wildlife on Crescent Island, cycle or hike in Hell’s Gate National Park, take a boat ride to see hippos and fish eagles, or hike Mt Longonot. We can add any of these to your transfer as a guided day.

Can I visit Hell’s Gate or Crescent Island on the way?

Yes. Both are close to Naivasha and pair well with the transfer. Ask us to build in Crescent Island’s walking safari or a Hell’s Gate visit, and we’ll quote the extra time and any entry fees clearly. Note the Hell’s Gate gorge can flood in heavy rain, so we follow current ranger guidance.

How much does a private transfer from JKIA to Naivasha cost?

We price it per vehicle rather than per person, and the figure depends on the vehicle, your exact destination, one-way or return, and any add-ons. Park and sanctuary fees and boat rides are excluded. Request a quote and we’ll confirm an exact price before you pay.

Is Naivasha doable as a day trip from JKIA?

Yes. It’s close enough to visit and return to the airport within a day, which also makes it a good option on a long JKIA layover. We’ll always check the day-trip timing against your onward flight before recommending it.

Will the driver meet me at JKIA arrivals?

Yes. After you clear immigration and collect your bags, your driver is waiting in the arrivals hall with a name sign. We monitor your flight, so an early or delayed landing is not a problem.

Can you take me to a specific Naivasha hotel or conference venue?

Yes — this is a private door-to-door transfer, so tell us the exact hotel, lodge or conference venue and we’ll drop you right there. We handle a lot of conference and group transfers to the lake resorts.
